When Smart Film May Not Be The Right Solution
Smart film is not appropriate for every academy application. Understanding the limitations ensures correct specification.
Blackout required (e.g. drama studios, AV rooms)
Smart film produces a frosted white opacity when unpowered — it does not block light. For drama studios, AV rooms, or photography spaces requiring blackout, smart film alone is insufficient. It can be combined with secondary blackout curtains, but this should be specified and costed accordingly.
Exterior glazing
Smart film is an interior application. Exterior glazing on academy buildings requires factory-laminated smart glass — a different and significantly more expensive product. If external glazing privacy is needed, this should be identified early in the design process.
Very small glass areas
For narrow sidelights, small vision panels, or glazed doors under approximately 0.3m², the installation cost per m² increases significantly. In these cases, static frosted film or anti-bandit glass may be a more proportionate solution.
No electrical supply available
Smart film requires a permanent low-voltage electrical connection. In listed buildings or heritage structures where routing new circuits is prohibited, static privacy solutions may be the only viable option.
