Smart Film for Windows UK — PDLC Smart Window Film & Electric Privacy Film
PriviFilm supplies PDLC smart film for windows across the UK — also searched as smart window film, smart glass film and electric privacy film. It retrofits to suitable existing glass and changes rapidly between frosted and clearer states, providing privacy without blinds for offices, healthcare, retail, education, hospitality and homes.
Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Technology — The Science Behind Switchable Privacy Glass
PDLC switchable film uses liquid crystal molecules suspended in a polymer matrix. No electrical current creates the frosted privacy state. Apply the matched AC supply and the film changes to its clearer state. Same technology as factory-made smart glass — without the glass replacement cost.
PDLC Smart Film Structure
Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) smart film consists of liquid crystal molecules suspended in a polymer matrix, sandwiched between two ITO conductive layers — the same core technology used in factory-made smart glass units.
Off = Instant Privacy Glass
Without electrical current, the liquid crystal molecules are randomly oriented, scattering light and creating the film’s frosted privacy state. Exact optical performance depends on the specified PriviFilm grade.
On = Clear Glass (83–92% transmission)
When the matched AC supply is applied, the liquid crystal molecules align and the film changes to its clearer state. Light transmission, haze and switching performance are grade-specific and confirmed in the quoted technical data.

Retrofit Smart Film vs Smart Glass Replacement — Cost, Speed & Disruption
Factory-made smart glass requires new glazing units. PriviFilm retrofit film can use suitable existing glass, but appearance, haze, controls, preparation, programme and whole-project cost should be compared for the actual project.
- Retrofit smart film onto existing single, double, or laminated glass — no glazing replacement needed
- Retrofit route costed against factory-made smart glass and replacement glazing
- Installation planned around pane count, preparation, access and electrical work
- Privacy without blinds — no blinds, no frosted glass, no curtains, no cords
- Alternative to frosted glass — maintain natural light with instant privacy on demand
- Integrates with BMS, room booking software, smart home, and automation systems
- Blocks up to 99% UV radiation — protects furnishings, occupants, and interiors
- Architectural smart film — custom cut to any size, shape, or geometry including curved glass
- Written product warranty terms supplied for the quoted PriviFilm system

PDLC Switchable Film — UV, Heat, Security & Energy Performance
PriviFilm switchable smart film provides controllable visual privacy. Additional solar, UV, safety and power-performance claims depend on the selected grade, test data and complete project specification.
UV Protection
Blocks up to 99% of harmful UV radiation, protecting interiors and occupants.
Heat Reduction
Reduces solar heat gain, lowering cooling costs and improving comfort.
Security
Adds a protective layer to glass, enhancing shatter resistance.
Energy Efficient
Power consumption is normally about 4W per square metre when energised, subject to the selected grade and controls.
Smart Film for Windows — UK Buyer & Specifier FAQs
Clear answers to the questions UK buyers, architects and installers ask about PDLC smart film, smart glass film and retrofit installation.
What is smart film?+
Smart film is a thin electrical PDLC layer applied to existing glass. It switches between an opaque privacy state and a clear state, providing controllable privacy without replacing the glazing.
What is smart film for windows?+
Smart film for windows is retrofit PDLC smart window film made for existing glass. It can be used on suitable windows, office partitions, meeting rooms, healthcare glazing and residential glass.
How does smart film work?+
PDLC smart film contains liquid crystal droplets inside a polymer layer. With the power off, the droplets scatter light and the film appears opaque. When the specified AC supply is applied, the droplets align and the film becomes clear.
What is smart glass and how is it different from smart film?+
Smart glass has switchable technology manufactured inside a glazing unit, whereas retrofit smart film is applied to suitable existing glass. Smart film usually avoids removing and replacing the original glazing.
Does smart film block sunlight?+
Smart film provides UV protection and some reduction in solar heat gain, but it is primarily a privacy product rather than a dedicated solar-control film. Performance should be checked against the selected film specification.
How long does smart film last?+
Service life depends on the selected product, installation, electrical design, environment and care. The written warranty supplied for the quoted PriviFilm system defines the actual cover.
Where can I buy smart film in the UK?+
PriviFilm supplies PDLC smart film for UK projects with UK stock, in-house cutting and technical support. Installation can be delivered by PriviFilm’s in-house team or by trained approved contractors, depending on the project.
Can smart film be installed on existing windows?+
Yes, retrofit smart film is designed for suitable existing flat glass. The glass type, coatings, condition, access and electrical route should be assessed before specification and installation.
PriviFilm is a UK smart film distributor with installer training, an in-house installation team and a trained approved contractor network.

When Smart Film May Not Be The Right Solution
Smart film is the correct specification for most privacy glazing applications — but there are scenarios where alternative solutions should be considered.
Blackout required
Smart film does not black out — it produces a bright white opacity when unpowered. If complete light exclusion is required (cinema rooms, photography studios, sleep environments), smart film should be combined with blackout curtains or blinds.
Variable tinting needed (not full privacy)
PDLC film switches between clear and opaque — it does not offer variable tint levels. If the requirement is light control without full privacy (atrium roofs, skylights, sunrooms), SPD (Suspended Particle Device) or electrochromic tinting may be more appropriate.
Curved or textured glass
Smart film is a flat substrate and cannot conform to curved, bent, or textured glass surfaces. For curved glazing, factory-laminated smart glass or alternative privacy solutions are required.
No electrical supply practical
Smart film requires a permanent low-voltage electrical connection. In listed buildings, conservation areas, or heritage properties where running new electrical circuits is prohibited or impractical, static privacy solutions (frosted film, manifestations) may be the only viable option.
Budget-constrained projects
Smart film has a higher upfront cost than static alternatives (frosted film, blinds, curtains). For projects where capital cost is the primary driver and switchable functionality is not required, static solutions provide privacy at lower initial expense.
Exterior glazing
Smart film is designed for interior application. Exterior exposure to weather, UV degradation, and temperature extremes reduces service life. For exterior switchable glazing, factory-laminated smart glass units are required.
