Smart Film Maintenance — Overview
One of the most significant long-term advantages of smart film over traditional privacy solutions is its near-zero maintenance requirement. Fabric blinds require regular cleaning, mechanism servicing, and periodic replacement. Hospital curtains require laundering on a set rotation. Venetian blind slats bend, break, and collect dust. Smart film has none of these requirements.
The maintenance of a smart film installation reduces to three elements: surface cleaning (occasional, simple), electrical inspection (infrequent, part of routine building maintenance), and performance monitoring (straightforward — if the film switches correctly, it is performing correctly). There are no consumables, no moving parts, and no specialist contractors required for day-to-day care.

How to Clean Smart Film
Smart film cleaning is simple. The surface is the same as cleaning standard glass.

Electrical Component Maintenance
The electrical components of a smart film installation — transformer, control switch, wiring, and bus bar connections — require no routine maintenance under normal operating conditions.
As part of any general building electrical inspection (typically every 3–5 years under IEE Wiring Regulations), the smart film circuit should be visually inspected and the transformer checked for signs of overheating, damage, or loose connections.
Transformers are designed for continuous operation with passive cooling. They should not be enclosed without adequate ventilation. A transformer that runs warm to the touch during operation is normal — one that runs hot or emits a burning smell should be inspected immediately.
Control switches have no consumable parts. Remote control receivers are low-maintenance — batteries in handheld remotes require periodic replacement.

Protecting Your Smart Film Surface
Edge Integrity
Film edges are sealed during installation. Avoid applying tape, adhesives, or suction fixtures at or near film edges. If an edge begins to lift, contact your approved partner immediately — early intervention prevents water ingress.
Scratch Resistance
The outer PET layer of smart film provides moderate scratch resistance comparable to standard window film. Normal office and commercial use will not damage the surface. Avoid dragging furniture or fixtures across the glass face.
Bus Bar Protection
The bus bars (thin electrical contacts at the film edge) are concealed under seal and trim during installation. Do not probe, clean, or interfere with the trim concealing bus bar connections.

How do I clean smart film?

Clean smart film with a soft microfibre cloth and mild soapy water or a standard glass cleaner. Avoid abrasive cloths, scouring pads, or solvent-based cleaners. The surface is the glass face of the film — treat it as you would clean glass.
Can smart film be cleaned with alcohol wipes?

In healthcare environments, IPA (isopropyl alcohol) wipes and standard hospital-grade disinfectants are compatible with PriviFilm™. Avoid leaving solvent solutions pooled at the film edges — clean from centre outward and allow to evaporate naturally.
What maintenance does the electrical system need?

The transformer and control system require no routine maintenance. Electrical components should be inspected by a qualified electrician as part of any general building electrical maintenance schedule — typically every 3–5 years. No consumables require replacement.
What happens if a section of smart film becomes damaged?

Individual panels can be replaced without affecting adjacent panels. Contact your PriviFilm approved partner with the panel dimensions and they will arrange replacement under warranty (if within the warranty period) or as a paid repair.
Does smart film require specialist cleaning products?

No. Standard glass cleaning products and microfibre cloths are all that is required. No specialist film cleaners, conditioning agents, or treatments are needed at any point in the product's life.
